Since launching Endangered with his Third Eye Shut EP, Brian Cid’s studio output has seen him appear on Tale of Us’ fabric 97 compilation, on Natura Sonoris with a remix for Henry Saiz, and also a collaboration with Justin Marchacos on Endangered’s second release. It’s now time for the Brooklyn-based DJ, producer and sound engineer to return full force to the label with Intriga, an EP filled with an abundance of Brian’s signature emotional journeys, and deep percussive themes. “Intriga EP is a sonic exploration to the deep side of melodic techno. It presents a story from beginning to end” says Brian. “Heavy on the drums as it's written for the dance floor, each one presenting a bold statement, more than mood tracks these are room shakers designed to impact. Written in the span of a year, I focused on using classic drum machines, modular and analog synths/pads as well as organic elements. This is my signature sound - this project doesn't belong anywhere else other than on Endangered.” Opening the five-track release, “The Space Above” quickly sets an atmosphere of deep textures, before diving into bursting chords that lead into the hypnotically driven “Fantasio”. Loaded with reverberating hi-hats and snares, percussion heavy “Petalos Sole” prepares listeners for the tension building lead title track “Intriga”, as its main motif journeys through waves of effects and striking synths. Rounding out the EP with its longest offering, “Vacio” features a futuristic arpeggiating melody between echoing pads and scattered crescendos. Did you know that you can make the song you released on Loudly or Music Maker Jam sound better and tighter without changing a single instrument, loop or FX in Music Maker Jam? Using a DnB collaboration track with the amazing Illz, we show the difference MASTERING your track can make. Especially before you publish your music to YouTube, Spotify, iTunes, Deezer or Soundcloud via iMusician and similar monetization and publishing services. There are several ways to master tracks for FREE! Mastering is the process of taking your audio mixes and bringing them to distribution quality. You used to need a sound engineer with years of experience for that. That's still the best solution, but for people on a budget there are free services that use smart software and even "artificial intelligence" to apply things like compression. LANDR claims to look at your track's production style, referencing a massive library of music genres and styles to create a unique fingerprint. PRE-PROCRESSING Based on what it's learned in step one, LANDR selects a unique set of audio post-production processors (think compressors, EQs, etc.) targeted just for your track. PROCESSING AND RENDERING Finally, LANDR's mastering software uses its machine learning to adjust all the knobs and dials to bring out the best from your track. Before mastering your track, it's a good idea to read this guide to preparing your mix: https://ift.tt/2Iy3Gnz (some excerpts below) Peak Headroom The most important thing to consider is Peak Headroom. Peak Headroom is crucial for mastering because LANDR uses the space you leave to apply all of its mastering adjustments. LANDR is restricted in what it can do for your mix if it has no room to play with. The final mix should have a fair amount of headroom (the room between your highest peak levels and 0dBFS, which is the maximum level digital audio can have). Aiming for around 6dB of headroom is nice and safe, which means your master output (all of your tracks' combined signal) should peak around -6 dBFS. -6 dB is generous - we recommend this to be safe. It's ok if some peaks hit higher than -6 dB, just make sure you maintain a few dB of headroom. Remember that we’re talking about your loudest sounds here, not your average level. Don’t get too caught up in the numbers - the biggest concern is peaks above 0 dBFS. 0 dBFS is the digital limit before distortion occurs. That’s why your meter goes red! So avoiding this is your main goal. Mastering involves compression techniques that use this space in order to add intensity, presence and glue your mix together - if the dynamic range is already gone - there’s not much LANDR can do on that front. The main culprit behind mixes with low dynamic range is heavy compression or limiting. We get it, using compression and limiting at the master or stereo output of your mix adds loudness and intensity, and you want your mix to be BIG! - but if you’re planning on using LANDR for that final touch - LANDR will take care of this for you. LANDR uses those dynamics you leave, so they recommend not adding any dynamic plugins that are typically used during the mastering process (i.e. limiters and compressors) to your master channel for the sake of loudness (not like you would do that in MMJ anyway). You can definitely have plugins on your master bus, just not ones that are there strictly to push your mix to the limit! Bandlab gives you 3 settings to choose from: 1) CD Quality 2) Bass Boost 3) Enhance Clarity Landr lets you choose between: 1) Low Intensity 2) medium Intensity 3) High Intensity Alternatives are Audacity, VLC or Magix Music Maker or Audio Evolution, all of which have various kinds of mastering features, but the services described in this video do everything automatically which is very convenient.
